This heterogeneity has two sides: it is an important feature of normal physiological processes, but it can also contribute to the development of cancer or immunological disorders. Traditional bulk RNA-sequencing methods are not able to resolve the heterogeneity of a cell population. But with new single-cell RNA sequencing technologies, it is now possible to analyse individual transcriptomes of thousands of cells in one sample.
